Physical Education

From the Gym…

Welcome to Physical Education! I do literally mean that because I have challenged my students to select one or more adults to encourage to exercise with them between now and the end of the school year. I ask them to go home and share the exercises that they are working on in class so that you can share in the building of not only a strong child, but also a strong family.

I remind them to start out with something enjoyable such as talking and walking where you can catch up and share some valuable time together. I know we all get busy in our lives. Please let us work together to show the children how important they are to us. Even if you can start out with a ten minute walk, it would be super!

I often talk to the children about how they only have one body and it needs to last them a lifetime. We discuss how if you are sick it impacts your entire day. Likewise, if you do not feel good about your body, it can impact you in the various areas of your life. We all know that when we do not feel good, our day tends to be exhausting and we can even be a little on the grumpy side!

My concern for the students is not in competition but rather in being healthy and understanding that by using their bodies physically, it can also impact them mentally and enhance their learning. Excess weight can be a problem as we become older and I am trying to encourage them to enjoy physical activity so that as they get older, they will continue to be self-motivated to have a healthy lifestyle.

One experiment that we have talked about is to go home and pick an unbreakable object to carry around for a few hours that is heavy, but not going to hurt them. This shows them what it would be like if they had extra weight that they carried around day after day. Examples include: a big can of soup, a bag of flour, a kitty cat, an adult pair of shoes, and a sack of potatoes. Try it and let me know the results!

Enjoy your time with your children and let me know of the good news that is happening to build a healthy family.
